Your throat hurts on Sunday evening, and the doctor's office is closed. A free symptom checker may help you choose between home care, a clinician, and urgent care. It cannot confirm a diagnosis.
What can a free symptom checker tell you?
A diagnosis names a condition. Triage addresses urgency: how soon you may need care and where to seek it. A checker may list possible causes, but a clinician can assess them in context.
A 2023 review of 14 studies found low diagnostic accuracy and widely varying triage performance. A separate follow-up compared the same 45 patient scenarios in 2015 and 2020 and found little overall triage improvement. These studies do not identify today's most accurate tool.

Use your free symptom checker result as a starting point
Enter every symptom and be as accurate as possible about age, medications, pregnancy, and health conditions. Focus on urgency before possible causes. Share the summary with your clinician and mention anything you missed. Seek guidance if symptoms worsen.
If you think you may be having an emergency, skip the checker. Call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, signs of stroke, or a person who is hard to wake. A free symptom checker should never delay needed care.
